Evidence for Synthesis of Deoxyribonucleic Acid in Enucleated Rana Pipiens Eggs

چکیده

The large quanti ty of DNA found in the cytoplasm of some eggs raises the question of whether DNA can be synthesized outside the nucleus. Data on the Rana pipiens egg were obtained some time ago and were first ment ioned in a paper by Schultz in 1956 (1). In the enucleated egg of this species, DNA, or a DNA-like molecule, doubles in amount in the first 30 hours after activation. Since the amount present in the whole egg before activation is at least 2000 times the haploid value (2, 3), an amount comparable to this may be synthesized by the cytoplasm.

"Transplantation of Living Nuclei from Blastula Cells into Enucleated Frogs' Eggs" (1952), by Robert Briggs and Thomas J. King

In 1952 Robert Briggs and Thomas J. King [5] published their article, ?Transplantation of Living Nuclei from Blastula Cells into Enucleated Frogs? Eggs,? in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences [6], the culmination of a series of experiments conducted at the Institute for Cancer Research [7] and Lankenau Hospital Research Institute [8] in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In this paper...

The initiation of protein synthesis in eggs of rana pipiens.

During amphibian o6genesis, small o6cytes in the first meiotic prophase undergo a prolonged growth period resulting in the formation of fully developed o6cytes which have greatly increased in size. The injection of a pituitary suspension into mature females stimulates the release of the full-grown o6cytes from the ovary and the breakdown of their large nuclei (germinal vesicles). The ovulated e...

Expression of the Kandiyohi Gene in Triploid Frogs Produced by Nuclear Transplantation.

variant, known as mottled or kandiyohi, occurs in populations of the common A leopard frog, Rana pipiens, in Minnesota and other north-central states (BRECKENRIDGE 1944; WRIGHT and WRIGHT 1949). The kandiyohi frog was described originally as a new species (WEED 1922), but genetic studies (VOLPE 1955) have revealed that it differs from the wild-type frog by a single dominant gene. The kandiyohi ...

Transplantation of Living Nuclei of Late Gastrulae into Enucleated Eggs of Rana pipiens

I N previous papers it has been shown that living nuclei of animal hemisphere cells of frog blastulae and early gastrulae can be transferred into enucleated eggs (Briggs & King, 1952,1953a). Approximately 20 per cent, to 40 per cent, of the recipient eggs cleave normally, and the majority of these develop into complete embryos, demonstrating that the transplanted nuclei are undifferentiated (i....

A block to cross-fertilization located in the egg jelly of the frog Rana clamitans.

The egg of Rana clamitans enrobed in its native jelly was not fertilized by sperm of R. pipiens. However, when R. clamitans eggs were enrobed by R. pipiens jelly, they were fertilized by R. pipiens sperm. Male pronuclei were found in the eggs, and most of the resulting embryos were diploid. The embryos gastrulated, but most arrested at midto late gastrula stages. Some begun neurulation, but non...
